YouTube is by far the most used video streaming platform in the world that has a plethora of videos to choose from.
Rated as one of the top 5 video streaming platforms online, YouTube offers you some of the best content on the internet today. This being said, there’s one major drawback to watching videos on YouTube – YouTube Ads.
Yup, these dreadful adverts can drastically ruin your overall entertainment experience but you don’t have to worry about it anymore.
Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can watch YouTube without Ads and I will take you through them step by step so that you can decide which method would be best for you.
How to Watch YouTube Without Ads
The Google-owned platform YouTube is able to generate revenue for itself by displaying ads to its viewers. These ads can appear pre-roll or mid-roll and are seriously irritating because you’d have to wait a couple of seconds before you can actually Skip the Ad.
There are a few ways to get rid of YouTube Ads and this can range from paying for YouTube Premium, downloading an Ad-Blocker or by simply tweaking the URL.
These methods I’m going to list are pretty straight forward and can be followed on your PC, Mac, or Smartphone.
Tweaking the URL
A Redditor who goes by the name u/unicorn4sale was able to figure out the easiest way to disable ads on YouTube without having to break your head. The hack is so simple that your overall viewing experience will not get hampered.
The best part is that as a user, you would not have to install or resort to third-party applications or software to disable YouTube Ads.
Here’s how you can watch YouTube without Ads simply by tweaking the URL:
- Open YouTube on your browser.
- Choose the video you wish to watch.
- Now, head to the URL bar and add a period (.) to the URL. This period should be placed after YouTube.com.
So apparently, tweaking the URL by adding the period results in YouTube no longer being able to normalize the host-name and there’s no host-name match so the page gets broken into various parts.
Though the page is broken into parts, it still delivers the content to the user but does not show ads, cross-origin resource sharing (CORS), or cookies.
Point to Note: The URL hack works on Mobile browsers as well. For this you’d have to open YouTube on Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Edge and “Request Desktop Site”. Once the site reloads, simply follow the same steps as listed above.
Using YouTube Ad-Blockers
Ad-Blockers and privacy extensions are designed to improve your web experience by limiting the number of pop-ups or ads you see while browsing the web, in this case YouTube.
If you do a search on Chrome or Firefox for an Ad-Blocker extension, you’d be provided with hundreds to choose from. But then again, it all boils down to how effective they are.
After trying and testing numerous Ad-Blockers, these are some that get the job done.
Adblock Plus (ABP) is one of the most popular ad blockers with extensions for browsers like Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Edge.
With ABP you can load a preset filter that will block ads on YouTube. The setup is rather easy with just a few options to choose from.
AdBlock Plus is also available for Android and iOS devices so there are no more adverts while browsing on your smartphone.
Adblock is not affiliated with Adblock Plus and is another brilliant ad-blocking extension that you can download on Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox.
It uses a series of filters that lists and automatically blocks unwanted ads on YouTube videos and other web pages.
The best feature of Adblock is that you’re able to customize your preferences and choose what you want to be blocked.
Adblock for YouTube
This extension from Adremover has everything you’d need to get rid of those pesky YouTube ads. Available to download on the Chrome web store, Adblock for YouTube lets you block ads, banners, pop-ups on YouTube and other sites that host YouTube videos and content.
This extension is great and works by simply blocking external ad URLs on YouTube.
CyberSec by NordVPN
CyberSec by Nord is one of the best Ad-Blockers in the market and can protect you from unsafe connections, malicious sites along with superior protection from Ads.
You can block ads on YouTube by accessing the blacklist database and selecting those sites to blacklist ads from popping up on.
This ad-blocker is available for the following systems: Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, Chrome, Firefox, Linux.
AdBlocker for YouTube
This add-on for Firefox created by AdblockLite will allow you to play videos faster by blocking all ads on YouTube. All you’d have to do is simply enable the Blocker on Firefox and the rest will be taken care of automatically.
AdBlocker for YouTube is highly recommended and works just as it was designed to.
Opting for YouTube Premium
YouTube Premium earlier known as YouTube Red, is a subscription service provided by the platform.
Here you receive access to premium content at a nominal fee every month, or if you’re looking for a yearly subscription you can go in for that too.
Not only does YouTube Premium mean no more ads, you also have access to download music videos on your mobile devices, watch YouTube Original content and even listen to uninterrupted music via YouTube Music.
YouTube Premium works on almost any smart device like TVs, Media Players, Game Consoles, Mobile Phones and Computers. This makes it one of the best cross-platform streaming services available today.
Benefits of YouTube Premium
If you plan on subscribing to YouTube Premium, you will gain access to the following benefits:
- Ad-Free Viewing – Premium account holders can view anything on YouTube without a single Advertisement. This is not limited to your Desktop, you will have the same ad-free experience across devices and is primarily one of the main reasons people opt for YouTube Premium.
- YouTube Originals – Content from high-profile creators are now at your fingertips. From documentaries and TV-shows to full length movies, there’s something for everyone.
- Background Play – The premium version of YouTube permits Picture-in-Picture or background play. Here you’re able to multitask while listening to your favorite song or while watching a cooking video on your mobile device.
- Download Videos – You can download videos or playlists on your smartphone or tablet to be played at a time when there’s no internet connection.
- YouTube Music Premium – Another great addition is YouTube Music, you will be able to access all YouTube Music features and the songs will be played back without ads.
|YouTube Premium Plan|
YouTube Premium is available with a 1 month free-trial post which the subscription fees are $11.99 per month, this includes access to YouTube Music Premium.
If you’re looking only for YouTube Music, then the subscription fees are $9.99 per month of an ad-free music listening experience.
Ever since unicorn4sale’s post went viral users have been toying with YouTube’s URL to remove ads from the videos. Unfortunately, this won’t last for long and YouTube is bound to get on it and rectify this flaw leaving users to resort to other options such as ad-blockers or by paying for YouTube Premium.
If you’re looking only to take care of the adverts, then going for a good ad-blocker like the ones listed above is the best way to go. However, if you’re looking for premium access to YouTube’s content apart from removing ads, then you can obviously opt to go Premium as YouTube does have some pretty great stuff available only to premium users.
It’s all up to you and what you feel comfortable with. I know that most will go in for a decent ad-blocker as they’re free to use but it all depends on your personal preferences.
